June 1999: An interview over lunch with Sam Snead in his restaurant at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. “Golf is a game of rhythm and timing”, he said waving his arms over a bowl of asparagus soup. “That’s all. Some say you’ve got to thrash it but you ain’t. It’s a simple game people make hard.” We talked for two hours and then he lent me his golf clubs and his golf shoes and gave me a lesson. One minute I was not fit to tie the laces of his golf shoes; the next I was wearing them.
