Andrew Jenks: Open memories 1977 to 2002

I've got so many Open memories - whether I was there watching, or elsewhere wishing I was watching, the Open has been a part of my life.

The first Open I remember is 1977 - the Duel in the Sun.

I also remember 1985. Sandy Lyle winning at Sandwich and I remember that it poured with rain all afternoon. I was gutted I couldn’t watch it live because I was playing in a junior match at Bridgnorth GC - Sandy's home county - and we got hammered!

Three years later at Lytham was my first experience of an Open Championship live, but play was abandoned on the Saturday lunchtime & I listened to the drama that unfolded in the final round when Seve went head to head with Nick Price on the radio.

In 1992 at Muirfield, this year's venue, I watched Nick Faldo at his peak during the third round and remember how awesome his driving was & what a good team Fanny & him made.

And then two years later I remember watching Nick Price nail a long putt in the glorious early Saturday evening Sunshine on the 18th. I was especially pleased as I had backed him that week & of course he went on to win the Claret Jug.

I also remember the terrible weather back at Muirfield in 2002. On the Saturday afternoon it was absolutely freezing! Late on in the afternoon the course was deserted of spectators due to the bad weather and we followed Padraig Harrington and Duffy Waldorf. We got so close to them because there was no-one around!

My final memory I can't place the date or venue but it was John Daly and Wayne Riley in the first group out on Saturday morning. They went round so fast they were practically racng each other and trying to hit it as far as they could. I remember Daly being right off balance after one tee shot!
