The scene is the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in 2008. It is the 18th hole of the second round and here I am caddying for my son Chris Wood. Chris is still an amateur and is competing in his first Open.
His approach to the 18th green just misses on the left-hand side and leaves him with a chip over a cavernous bunker to the pin. No need to worry though, I think, because he is comfortably inside the cut and with Chris's short game an up and down is a 75% probability.
Chris has other ideas, however, and he plays an exquisite chip shot which lands softly on the green and rolls towards the pin and IN!!! for a birdie! The memory gets better though because the chip shot was played right in front of the stand where a small army of supporters, who travelled up from our club, Long Ashton GC, are watching. An enormous cheer goes up around the final green.
It really doesn't get any better - for a dad who is a golfing nut, caddying for his son in the best tournament in the world and then watching his son hole his chip shot in front of our friends and family! The memory still sends a shiver down my spine!!
