Dale Concannon: not playing but meeting a great of another game - Franz Beckenbauer

September 11 is a date that will live with us all for various reasons.

For me it has far happier memories.

I was living in Munich in 1995 and visiting a Brit golf pro pal who was playing a local pro-am tournament. I arrived around noon to find the event had been cancelled for the day because of a typically violent Bavarian rainstorm.

Almost everyone had gone home but my pal and I decided to take lunch in the clubhouse. From the bar area we heard strains of "Happy Geburtstag" being sung and with barely a glance up went back to our Weis Beer.

Moments later, a tall elegant figure walked over to our table and offered us some of his 50th birthday cake.

It was the Kaiser himself Franz Beckenbauer! He then invited us over to join him and his guests which included skier Franz Klammer and ex German Goal keeper, Sepp Maier. We stayed all afternoon and discussed everything from the lack of public courses in Germany to Geoff Hursts disputed 1966 World Cup final goal! After all, who wouldn't given the opportunity.

His opinion? Not a Goal, no way, no how.......
