Alan Scorfield: a two shot round

Working in sport leaves you little time to pursue your own hobbies and sporting pastimes so the Christmas period is often a time to get involved in sport with friends.

Some time ago I, along with good friends Colin Launder and Geoff Cheetham decided the break between Christmas and New Year would be a good time to play golf. We duly arrived at Wike Ridge and paid our fees. As we were getting ready it began to snow quite heavily but we decided that the shower was not going to put us off. The walk to the first tee had s thinking it was perhaps a bit more than a shower as the path was already covered in snow. Stood on the tee we looked up at the sky which was grey and heavy, then we looked at each other in our woolly hats and Christmas jumpers. "We're here now" Said Geoff, " Lets just play."

Geoff hit a fantastic shot right down the middle and Colin followed with a superb drive. My own first shot went less than a hundred yards and a bit to the right and we set off walking towards our balls in what was now a driving blizzard. I found my ball and stood by it ready to take out a club - a small snow drift was building up on top of the ball as I addressed it! SMACK! "Good shot Al! that must be near the green", came the shout, but as we all walked towards the green the snow kept coming.

By the time we got to the end of the fairway, all we could see was a white expanse. It was pretty obvious that there was no way we were going to find any balls in what was now a fairway four inches deep in snow. As I had taken two shots to their one, Colin and Geoff agreed that I had lost and first round of drinks was on me back in the clubhouse! The shortest round of golf ever and I still ended up losing but a great laugh for all three of us.
