Iain Carter: Louis Oosthuizen and I play the 2nd at Augusta

My memories come from the Masters and are twofold.

Firstly on the Sunday afternoon Louis Oosthuizen leapt up the leader board with a stunning fairway wood second shot to Augusta's par 5 second. It is a glorious hole and he struck his second shot down the hill so that it would find the front of the green through a narrow entrance bordered by bunkers. From there it took the contours of the green, swinging left to right across the back of the putting surface before tracking further right to the hole cut on the far right of the green. The ball obligingly dropped into the cup for the first Masters albatross recorded on the hole.

Watching, I knew would be playing that hole the next day, having been lucky enough to have emerged from the media ballot to play the course. How, I wondered would I play that hole? As it turned out there was a striking similarity, though sadly not with my second shot. A hooked drive, a hack from the trees and approach into the front left bunker saw to that. I splashed out to around 60 feet from the hole. As I sized up the putt, my caddie Keith marched straight left of where I stood and pointed to a spot at the back of the green that he said was my target. He had gone left, the hole was to my right, but I followed his instruction. "Too hard," he said as I hit the ball. He was wrong. The ball headed up the hill to where he had pointed and then turned sharp right and followed exactly the line of Oosthuizen's second shot the previous day. It continued its' course across the back of the green, took the borrow, turned right and duly dropped in for the most unlikely par of my life. An unforgettable moment!
